"03 Nov Encompass Plans a One-Off Broadcast From UK to India on Nov 4th

Encompass Digital Media will be running a one-off transmission from its site in Woofferton, UK, on Friday 4th of November. This electronic music broadcast will target the whole of India, around 5,000 miles (or about 8,000 kilometres) as the crow flies to the centre of the country. This might be the longest distance Encompass has covered with its DRM transmissions.

Before the actual broadcast, several tests were run using different frequencies, antennas and power combinations. The final test on November 2nd to confirm final set-up was a great success as the audio could be recorded from a KiwiSDR online receiver located in New Delhi. The SNR of 20dB was measured in New Delhi and 23.9dB in Bangalore, which proves the power of shortwave radio and how DRM and its excellent sound, even in shortwave, can travel such long distances. The audio was also decoded in Bangkok, and a listener report came even from Canada!

This experimental broadcast promoting the music of C. M. Obrecht is scheduled for tomorrow, 19:00 – 20:00 UTC, on 11710kHz. It will use xHE-AAC codec with DRM Mode B, transmitting at 125kW on a 78* bearing from Woofferton. The audio will be accompanied by ancillary data including a slideshow image of the album cover art.

Although the transmission time will mean it will be quite late in India, Encompass is interested in receiving any reception reports from within the country, particularly from anybody using a car radio. Relations are tense between Radio Romania and the National Radiocommunication Society. Radio Romania is tired of increasingly poor performances of transmissions made with material over twenty years old.

The Romanian Broadcasting Company (SRR) was, even, on the verge of terminating the contract and taking all technical and legal measures to repair the damage caused by the SNR.

Following complaints, the National Society of Radiocommunications (SNR or Radiocom) has launched a tender for the renewal of 5 medium wave transmitters. The choice of the supplier will be made soon

The main transmitter center affected by the grievances of Radio Romania is the one of Constanta in Valu lui Traian, where a transmitter has been out of order for almost two years. But the concern is also at the level of short-wave transmitters where outages have occurred for years.

Instead of investing in equipment replacement and upgrading, SNR invested in other highly controversial areas, according to “Cetă Aueanul” investigations. just”.

The threats posed by the Romanian Broadcasting Society are resolved by the upcoming acquisition of 5 new medium-wave transmitters, 3 of which will be installed in Valu lui Traian:

1 25 kW AM transmitter – DRM simulcast on 909 kHz for Radio Constanta;
1 50 kW AM transmitter – DRM simulcast on 1314 kHz for Antenna Satelor;
1 50 kW AM transmitter – DRM simulcast on 1458 kHz to replace Radio Romana Actualitäti transmitter that has been currently out of service for two years.

The other two transmitters will be installed in Oradea Rontau for Radio Romana Actualitäti on 603 kHz (1 50 kW AM transmitter – DRM simulcast) and in Bucharest Herăstrău for Antenna Satelor on 603 KHz (1 25 kW AM transmitter – DRM Simulcast).

In addition to these 5 OM transmitters and a solution for OC transmitters and antennas, the Romanian Radiodiffusion Society is also waiting for the refurbishment of all FM transmitters and the urgent start of the DAB+.

On its part, SRTv demanded the completion of the full commissioning of the DVB-T2 digital television, delayed for almost two years.

Last week, Pakistan’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb inaugurated 12 new studios which were set up on modern lines at Radio Pakistan under a reform agenda by the incumbent government.
The minister said that the government had rolled out a reform programme to upgrade and digitize Radio Pakistan on war footing. A comprehensive business plan had also been worked out to transform Radio Pakistan into a financially viable organization.
The studios she inaugurated were meant for round the clock sports transmission of Radio Pakistan FM at 94 frequency, broadcast of programmes in 11 regional languages, dedicated platform for discussing environmental challenges and highlight the country’s biodiversity, wildlife, water management, forest conservation and management. A world service was also launched to provide all sort of news, culture and heritage related content to the overseas Pakistanis.
Marriyum said the government had approved a digital DRM transmitter project worth Rs 4 billion in the current year’s Public Sector Development Programme.
The project would be launched soon in Rawat, she said, adding that Radio Pakistan’s Digital Migration would take the state broadcaster’s transmissions in clear sound not only across the length and breadth of the country but also beyond its borders.
This follows the June official announcement that the Federal Ministry for Planning Development and Special Initiatives had approved the upgrade of the HPT Rawat transmitting station with the acquisition of a 1000 KW DRM enabled medium wave transmitter.
This is part of phase 1 of a three-phase DRM digitisation plan of the public Pakistani broadcaster; in effect, this signifies that Pakistan has embraced the DRM standard in all bands for the whole country.

Radio Pakistan is going to launch Digital Medium Wave Transmitter project in Rawat tomorrow [Sunday].
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb will perform groundbreaking of the project under which a 1000 kilowatt digital transmitter will be installed at HPT complex, Rawat.
The project will be completed in two years at a cost of four billion rupees and is a milestone in modernizing the state broadcaster and enhancing the quality of its broadcast.
This digital transmitter will increase the signal strength and range of Radio Pakistan’s broadcasts to several countries in Central Asia, Middle East, Far East, Turkiye and Greece in addition to south Asia.
This modern transmitter based on Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) technology, can transmit up to four different signals simultaneously. It will save 33 percent of electricity which in turn will reduce the expenses of state broadcaster.
An emergency warning system to alert people in natural calamities will also be available through this transmitter.
UK based international organization DRM Consortium has also appreciated the government’s initiative to convert Radio Pakistan from analogue to digital mode after 75 years.

"16 Oct DRM Broadcast on 80th Anniversary of Woofferton Transmitting Station UK (WOF), October 17, 2023

The station was originally built by the BBC during the Second World War to house additional shortwave (HF) broadcasting transmitters. When it officially started broadcasting on October 17, 1943, it had six 50 kW RCA transmitters, obtained by land-lease. The site has been modernised many times over the years and is now DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) capable providing daily digital radio programmes.

To mark its 80th anniversary Encompass Digital Media (a key DRM member) will be running a special programme on HF analogue and DRM, too at Woofferton Transmitting Station (WOF) in south-west UK. Here are the details:

Tuesday 17th October 2023 from 1330 – 1430 UTC/GMT
Sender 95 Marconi (BD272 from 1963) 250 kW AM 15245 kHz Array 928 294* for North America
Sender 96 Riz 250 kW AMC 17785 kHz Array 904A 114* for Europe and beyond.
Sender 92 Riz 110 kW DRM 11725 kHz Array 909A 114* for Europe and beyond.
There will be an opening interval signal on all three frequencies.



The programme content will be historical facts of WOF in BBC, VoA, Radio Free Europe, R Liberty ,CBC etc and the later privatised times, DW and VoV for example as well as up-to-date information on DRM as well as personal recollections from many former WOF staff. There will be station idents of services over the years.
